MEDICINES SHORTAGES IN HOSPITALS

Despite considerable efforts within the industry, shortages of both innovative life-saving medicines and essential generics in hospitals are putting a strain on healthcare systems around the world, posing a major risk to patient care and constantly forcing hospital pharmacists to seek out alternatives in order to plug gaps in the supply chain.

The global unmet medical needs represented by hospital drug shortages are estimated at more than USD 7 billion per year (IQVIA report, 2020).

For over a century, the FarmaMondo Group has been dedicated to expanding access to medicines through collaboration with pharmaceutical manufacturers, jointly addressing unmet medical needs across the board.

The global shortage of essential drugs in hospitals has long been a critical issue affecting healthcare systems worldwide. It compromises the quality of patient care and places significant strain on healthcare professionals who are working tirelessly to provide effective treatments.

Hospital shortages result from a complex set of factors, including manufacturing disruptions such as batch quality failures, regulatory challenges, distribution and transport bottlenecks, and geopolitical tensions. The sudden and potentially prolonged unavailability of life-saving medicines and essential generics has profound and immediate consequences for both caregivers and patients.

The shortage of medicines in hospitals is a global challenge that affects richer countries as much as poorer ones.

In an EU-wide survey, hospital pharmacists from 26 countries reported worsening shortages compared with the previous year. In the USA, 2023 saw an average of 301 drugs in shortage per quarter, representing a 13% increase from the previous year. Over 99% of US hospitals reported drug shortages, with 85% describing the impact as critically or moderately severe.

The limited availability of essential medicines in middle- and low-income countries where FarmaMondo operates extensively represents a significant unmet need.

Around 85% of stockouts in hospitals are generic drugs.
